The Gravity of Attitudes in the Workplace

Employee attitudes are the foundation of a collective consciousness that invariably create and sustain an organization. These attitudes are the life-blood of productivity, quality, innovation, passion, enthusiasm and ultimately prosperity. (Prosperity in the context of having an abundance of resources to make a meaningful and lasting contribution to others). Smart companies like SAS know that investing in employee benefits and resources will translate into better attitudes resulting into high profits and low turnover. See: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/bestcompanies/2010/snapshots/1.html Also, I believe that it's important to note that attitudes within a company are subject to what I call organizational gravity. In other words, the most influential employees have a greater impact on the attitudes of employees that are less dominant. An example of this would be the fact that a department manager's attitude can flow downward to multiple subordinates easier than attitudes from staff interns can project upward to the company President. Either way is certainly a possibility; however, we all know that it takes quite a bit of ingenuity to defy gravity, right? The point is that managers should be more sensitive to what type of attitudes they are vibrating in the workplace since their influence is often far-reaching. Today’s managers often under emphasize the importance of attitudes because they simply do not understand the impact. Careful study of the relationship between home/work life, the need for acceptance /contribution; and the connection between thought and creation would go a long way to assist managers in appreciating the impact of attitudes. If managers can directly link managerial success to employee attitudes then perhaps the emphasis would appear more balanced.
